Welcome to the OrthoTraining Catalog of Courses.

OrthoTraining is a unique "system" of teaching and learning that is focused on the individual learner. Our courses are specially-designed and delivered online using innovative technology. The courses have very detailed content that is presented interactively to enhance quick learning of the objectives. After the student has mastered learning, the student's understanding and retention are measured by special assessments that track student responses generating individual performance data. The system then analyzes this data to report, document, and certify on a Student Dashboard Report, a transcript, that the student has completed the online courses. This "grading" does not involve the local mentor or professor. Students are in control of their learning, their progress, and their grades.

One student or a large group of students are "supervised" by a local mentor who has previously learned the online courses. This mentor conducts hands-on training using detailed OrthoTraining checklists that are integrated with online course content. The mentor may just focus on helping students who need it. Data from these activities may also be reported and documented on the Student Dashboard Report. With the OrthoTraining system, there is data that may be used to make evidence-based decisions about the effectiveness of the program.

Every learner using the OrthoTraining platform should view this course first to understand how the system is designed for interactive, quick learning of course objectives and then, how to perform procedures using detailed checklists. This course illustrates how student learning is measured, reported, documented, and then certified on a Student Dashboard transcript as a function of the platform without involvement of the mentor or professor. The mentor's role is focused on helping students who need it. Students are in control of their learning and their progress.

This introductory section of the Orthodontic Bonding course is designed to help the practice determine the best way to use this course. The material presented is partitioned into sections which can be viewed independently to focus on a particular area of bonding or the course can be viewed in its entirety.
0:15
1
This section covers: Chapter 1: Benefits of Properly Bonded and Positioned Brackets Chapter 2: Criteria for Properly Bonded Brackets Chapter 3: Bracket Identification Chapter 4: Components of a Bracket
0:33
2
This section covers: CHAPTER 5: How Do Braces Move Teeth? CHAPTER 6: Preparing Teeth For Bonding Different methods of moving teeth are covered briefly in this Part 2 of the Orthodontic Bonding Course. Also presented in this part is each step in the process of preparing teeth for bonding such as pumicing the teeth, isolation using the Great Lakes Dry Field System primarily, roughening, etching, rinsing, drying, and preparation of the brackets for a full bonding.
0:47
3
This section covers the materials used in bonding such as: CHAPTER 7: Adhesion Enhancers; CHAPTER 8: Sealants; CHAPTER 9: Adhesive Pastes. Adhesion enhancers are discussed especially with respect to bonding to special surfaces such as composite, metal, and porcelain. Many types of sealants are also discussed and illustrated. Finally, different types of adhesive pastes are presented in detail such as those types used to bond brackets, bonding lingual retainers, or bonding second molars.
0:35
2
This section covers CHAPTER 10.0: Sequence of Bracket Placement. In this chapter a specific sequence of placing and curing brackets is recommended that reduces moisture contamination problems and allows balanced positioning of brackets on the right side and the left. This method uses efficient time management by maximizing the skills of the well-trained orthodontic assistant and requiring the doctor only for the critical step of final bracket positioning.
0:31
2
This course covers Chapter 10.5: Bracket Placement and Positioning. It includes tooth landmarks that may be used when positioning brackets during a direct bonding. These principles are like those used for positioning brackets in indirect bonding. Use of these principles by the doctor and all team members during direct bonding standardizes desired bracket positions so that all team members will “see” when a bracket is not in position and may need to be repositioned for more efficient treatment.
0:35
3
This section covers CHAPTER 11: Bonding Difficult Areas; CHAPTER 12: Bond Troubleshooting; CHAPTER 13: Rebonding A Bracket. When bonding difficult areas such as blocked out maxillary laterals, high maxillary canines, and all second and third molars, there are five factors to evaluate before preparation of the teeth. These include the best method of isolation, visibility, access, bracket size, and occlusion.
0:46
2
This section covers bonding to special surfaces, specifically: CHAPTER 14: Bonding To Composite Restorations CHAPTER 15: Bonding To Porcelain CHAPTER 16: Bonding To Metal Surfaces Each step of successful bonding to these special surfaces is covered in this part and can be applied clinically with the use of detailed checklists. These methods have been proven to work clinically.

This course covers each step of selecting, inserting, and tying in an initial wire in a newly bonded patient. It includes measuring the length of the wire considering extra wire for tying into rotated teeth, cooling down thermal wires to engage them into rotated teeth, Alastic tying methods including a butterfly tie, placement of wire ties so that they do not poke the patient, checking and clipping wire ends safely, and placing bend backs for wires extending over a long span.

1
Part 2 demonstrates how to carefully examine an adult, teen, and child panoramic radiograph evaluating missing teeth, root resorption potential, position of maxillary canines, ankylosis, timing of full eruption, third molars, and TM joints.
1
Part 3 demonstrates how to evaluate facial symmetry, face shape, horizontal commissures, occlusal plane cant and cause, and vertical facial midlines, smile line and smile width, soft tissue profile as related to the cephalometric profile, and the vertical facial height which impacts orthodontic diagnosis.
1
Part 4 demonstrates how to examine all of the teeth noting decay, decaldification, crowns, bridges, and so forth, evaluating oral hygiene, examining the periodontium for gingival disease, recession and biotype, , evaluating habits such as mouth breathing, bruxism, and screening the TMJ for abnormalities.
1
Part 5 demonstrates how to examine the four orthodontic planes of space: Anterior-Posterior for Angle Class and overjet, Transverse such as dental and facial midlines and posterior crossbites, Vertical such as overbite, deep bites, and open bites, and Perimeter such as crowding, spacing, Bolton tooth size discrepancy, and other dental features that would impact diagnosis and treatment.

This course, written by Dr. Robert Little, Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, Department of Orthodontics, Seattle, Washington, covers the pioneers in the history of cephalometrics, producing a ceph, ceph bony landmarks, 40 common ceph measures and their diagnostic meaning, hand tracing a ceph and a ceph superimposition and analysis of the findings, and a ceph summary review of a lecture given at an AAO annual session.
This course explains the development of the cephalometer the unique features of B. Holly Broadbent’s original cephalometer. It also summarizes the contributions of the many pioneers in cephalometric assessment such as B. Holly Broadbent, Allan Brodie, William Downs, Charles Tweed, Richard Riedel, Cecil Steiner, Arne Bjork, Robert Ricketts, and Reed Holdaway.

This course teaches how to compare the tracings of one film against the tracing of a film taken later, by creating a superimposition and then interpreting the differences between the two films. Interpreting serial headfilms can reveal the following: a. Changes of size and position of skeletal structures b. Changes in tooth position c. Changes in facial profile d. The effects of orthodontic treatment on structures of the head e. Changes due to relapse after treatment and f. Some prediction of future growth or changes with treatment and the prognosis for achieving results with different treatment plans.
